Goan Catholic Christmas is a family occasion long before it is a beach one — weeks of kuswar sweets made at home, a midnight mass that everybody attends, and a table on the twenty-fifth that runs well into the afternoon.
South Goa stays markedly quieter than the north through the same week. The churches here go back to the Portuguese centuries and are still working parish churches rather than monuments, which is exactly why the mass feels like one.
