The Crown and the Five Rivers
Begin at the very top. Shikaras cross Dal Lake in Kashmir; prayer flags stream over Ladakh's passes; deodar thins to scree above Spiti. The Ganga gathers at Rishikesh, Le Corbusier's grid squares off at Chandigarh, and Delhi holds the plain it has held for seven cities.

The River Remembers Everything
The map flattens and slows. The Ganga draws its long line through wheat and brick; tigers hold the forests at the country's centre; and cities older than memory keep their morning rituals.

The Desert Runs to the Sea
The road turns west into camel country: forts of honey sandstone, a salt desert that glows at night, then the Deccan drops to the port cities — and on to a coast that still keeps Portuguese time, from Diu's ramparts to Goa's chapels.

Tea, Tide and First Light
The Ganga fans into a delta; temple corridors face the sea; tea gardens climb toward Kanchenjunga. Seven sister states keep their hills and root bridges largely to themselves — and far out in the Bay, the Andamans end their rainforest at white sand.
South India · 05
The Peninsula Narrows to Three Seas
The Deccan's granite kingdoms give way to coffee estates, painted gopurams and backwater calm — French shutters at Puducherry, coral atolls off the Malabar coast — until the land tapers to a point at Kanyakumari, where three seas fold into one another.
