Wake up in Mawlynnong

The cleanest village in Asia. Bamboo skywalks above the village floor, treehouses, the woman-led economy you came east to see.

A waterfall in dense forest near Mawlynnong

A magazine called it the cleanest village in Asia in 2003 and the label stuck, but what is actually going on here is a Khasi community that has organised its waste, composting and planting collectively for decades.

There is a bamboo skywalk up into the canopy, and a living root bridge at Riwai a short walk away. The village is small, and it is far better as a night than as a stop on the way to somewhere else.
