Sleep on Majuli, the river island

The world's largest river island, sinking a metre every monsoon. Stilt-house mask-makers, satras, and a culture racing the Brahmaputra.

Bamboo stilt houses beside the water on Majuli island

One of the largest river islands in the world, and shrinking every year as the Brahmaputra takes it back. What is there is farmland, stilted bamboo houses, and satras.

The satras are Vaishnavite monasteries founded in the wake of Sankardeva's fifteenth-century reform movement, and they are where the dance, drama and mask-making of Assam have been kept alive. Samaguri is the one to go to for masks.
