13,700 ft, the gateway to the eastern Himalayas, snow-blocked half the year. Special permits, three cultures, the highest monastery in India at the end.
The pass tops out around 4,170 metres, with a lake just below it that stays frozen for much of the year. It is the only road link between the Assam plains and Tawang, which makes it both strategically important and heavily used.
Tawang monastery at the far end is the largest in India. Arunachal requires an Inner Line Permit, and the road can close for snow with very little notice at either end of the season.
