The abandoned village of Kuldhara at midnight

Evacuated overnight in 1825, cursed by its priests, never resettled. With a local guide, the desert ghost-town starts speaking.

The abandoned stone houses of Kuldhara

The Paliwal Brahmins who farmed here left overnight in the 1820s, the story goes, cursing the village so that nobody could ever settle it again. Nobody has.

What stands is roofless sandstone streets and doorways twenty minutes from Jaisalmer, and a great deal of quiet. Go at the end of the day — the site closes at sunset, which is itself part of the legend.
