The parikrama at Adi Kailash

The five-peak holy circuit at 16,000 ft, opened to civilians only since 2023. The lesser-known sibling of Mount Kailash, and arguably the harder walk.

Red pilgrim flags and a trident beside a high-altitude lake

Deep in Pithoragarh's Kuti valley, close to the Tibet border, where a peak that pilgrims treat as Shiva's second home stands above a lake that mirrors it. Om Parvat, with the snow that settles into a syllable on its face, sits on the same route.

The road in has improved enormously in recent years, which has changed the character of the journey as much as the difficulty of it. Permits still apply, and the altitude remains serious.
