10-day Vipassana at Dhamma Giri, Igatpuri

No phones, no books, no eye contact, no speaking. The most quietly difficult thing on this list — and the only one that changes you on the way out.

A golden Vipassana meditation pagoda under monsoon cloud

Ten days at Igatpuri, the centre S. N. Goenka established in the 1970s and the largest of its kind. No talking, no reading, no writing, no phone, no eye contact — and something close to ten hours of sitting a day.

There is no fee. Courses run on donations from people who have already completed one, and that is a deliberate part of the method rather than a quirk of the accounting. It is difficult in ways that are hard to convey beforehand and hard to regret afterwards.
