Sunset prayer wheels at Thiksey

The 7 p.m. puja in the gompa courtyard. Then the prayer wheels, one at a time, around the perimeter, as the Indus turns gold below.

A large painted prayer wheel inside a Ladakhi monastery

Twelve storeys of whitewashed building stacked up a hill, arranged closely enough like the Potala that the comparison is unavoidable. The Maitreya temple holds a seated Buddha built across two floors for a visit by the Dalai Lama.

Come for the evening rather than the middle of the day, when the wheels are being turned by people on their way home and the Indus valley goes gold underneath you.
