The Bishnoi have followed twenty-nine precepts set out by Guru Jambheshwar in the fifteenth century, several of which forbid felling a green tree or harming an animal. At Khejarli in 1730, hundreds died holding onto khejri trees to stop them being cut for a palace.
The consequence is visible from the road: blackbuck and chinkara graze beside the villages instead of fleeing them, which happens almost nowhere else in India. You stay in the villages rather than near them.
