A week through Hemis National Park, over the Kongmaru La at a little above 5,000 metres, dropping through Skiu, Markha and Hankar — villages that have farmed this valley for centuries. You sleep in people's houses rather than tents.
The homestay network was set up partly to give villagers a reason to tolerate snow leopards instead of shooting them, so walking it is a small transaction on the cats' side. Acclimatise in Leh first; a 5,000-metre pass is the wrong place to find out you haven't.
