Be on the river before the first light. Watch a city older than recorded history begin its day in the only way it knows.
The famous fire ceremony is the evening one at Dashashwamedh, performed to a crowd. The dawn rite at Assi is a quieter thing, addressed to the sun rather than to an audience, and followed by ragas as the light comes up over the river.
Take a boat out beforehand and watch the ghats from the water — the city only makes sense from the river it was built to face. Everything after that, all day, is somebody's ritual.
