Surf the long right at Kovalam

Three south Indian beach breaks, an Indo-Aussie surf school, and one of the country's only thriving female surf collectives.

A surfer riding inside a breaking wave

A crescent of beach under a red-and-white lighthouse at the southern end of Kerala, with a break gentle enough to stand up on for the first time and days, when the swell lines up, that are worth having waited for.

The season runs either side of the monsoon rather than through it. The local scene is small, serious and welcoming, boards and lessons are easy to arrange, and the water is warm enough that a wetsuit is beside the point.
